Context

Supporting a Growing Competitive Gaming Flagship.

Beast in the East is a multi-day dance gaming convention where several games come to host their biggest flagship tournaments. I designed a series of broadcast overlays and visual assets used during promotional content and live tournament streams. In addition, I headed event operations by coordinating with the venue as well as 30 staff members to ensure the tournaments ran smoothly throughout the entire weekend, starting from Beast In the East 7 in 2024, and going to Beast In the East 8 in 2025.

Research + Brainstorming

Below are sketches for the stream layout, where I conducted a competitive analysis of other gaming events to identify key broadcast components that help clearly communicate match details and keep viewers engaged.

Event Leading & Team Coordination

Thinking as One Unit

The bulk of my work in the Beast in the East project was through my role as a head event organizer. I utilized my background as a product designer to help me use Human Centered Design to connect deeper to my users, coordinate with stakeholders, and enxure teams can execute smoothly under the weekend timeline.

Reflections

Designing for Live Environments Requires Clarity and Transparency

Broadcast interfaces are used during fast-paced live events which have opportunity to provide additional context and insight to views, increasing viewer interest and retention numbers. I did this through clear design hierarchy and readability so that viewers could quickly understand match details without distracting from impact of gameplay.

Human-Centered Design Applies Beyond Digital Products

Though this project focused primarily on event operations and visual design, the same human-centered design principles helped me greatly in creating products that connect deeply with stakeholders. Understanding the needs of players, viewers, and staff helped guide decisions about tournament structure, stream layout, and how the event experience was presented.

Strong Coordinating Requires Real Connection With the Team

Coordinating a team of over 30 staff members required more than designating tasks clearly: Regular communication, clear expectations, and trust across the team helped me ensure my team understood their responsibilities and could work together efficiently throughout the entire weekend.
