Pump It Up Events Expand Rapidly Nationwide

Rhythm gaming events featuring Pump It Up are rapidly increasing in both frequency and scale across the United States. Local competitions are evolving into a growing competitive circuit with massive potential, but the current Excel based management systems are starting to fall behind.

Competitive Participation Grows Faster Than Existing Systems

Through my own experience as a tournament organizer, I identified three core problems with the current systems:

Visibility was highly limited

Even amongst members of our niche community, events were still very scattered and had limited awareness.

Excel Tools didn’t scale

The excel sheets most organizers relied on to manage brackets required extensive work to manage, especially for bigger events.

Lack of Standardization

Because individual organizers made their own sheets and workflows, it made onboarding new staff very difficult.

Solution

Crafting a Standardized Tournament Management Platform

I led the design of the website as well as user workflows to streamline event visibility, bracket management, and ease of onboarding for teams of multiple organizers, increasing the accessibility and efficiency of event running. In addition, I communicated with my engineering team and helped contribute some front end implementation to see my figma prototypes through to the real platform.

I decided to keep the designs very straight forward to make our design easy to standarize and invite users of varying proficiencies to our platform, in addition the key designs were implemented for simplicity’s sake, given our first deadline and timeframe of 3 months.

Reflections

Match the Simplicity of the Task to the Design

Tournament organizers are often managing many things during live events, even though the systems are detailed and ornate, the interface should remain simple and easy to use.

Designing for Multiple Stakeholders

The problems we've identified previously are shared by our many user groups who obtain significant but different values from our platform. This interface was designed around our many user groups to solve as many problems as we can from the community.

Design Doesn't End At Handoff

I took the initiative to teach myself and learn from my engineering peers so I could better understand how to develop my own prototypes, and I learned that not every design idea can be implemented easily. Cross Communicating with the engineering team helped me adjust my designs to create the best possible solutions within the project's timeline and technical constraints.
